Go west, young [travel] thread
So I am on a grand months-long sojourn across the entire continental United States (mostly the west coast because the family is there) and I've been enjoying the many and sundry wonders of this great nation
But also I've been bored stiff driving across interstates and wondering why anyone would ever go to New Mexico for any reason. Also I got food poisoning in a Waffle House in Texas when there was three inches of snow on the ground. It's been a weird couple of months!
Still, it's been a real fun experience, for the most part. There's something about the simple goals of a road trip, the clarity of purpose and (beyond holiday and family obligations) the freedom to go wherever you please that makes it different from flying somewhere and renting a car, y'know?
So in light of the scope of this journey I am on (and since Christmas is over now) I thought I'd make a thread where we could talk about traveling and vacations and stuff
Where have you been, SE++, and where do you hope to go?
...and also can you Seattle people tell me where to go because I don't know shit about anything around here. I guess the space needle is cool?? And there's casinos I guess???

Mighty Morphin Power Thread: where we of course talk about TMNT
So there's this Franchise:
![Power_rangers_logo.png]()
Its a kids action show that is currently on its 20th season, something totally unprecidented that will probably never happen again
It features normal teenagers with attitude
![1301361-tommy16.jpg]()
Who get super powers through the morphing grid (I swear I'll only explain if someone asks) and can turn into superheroes with cool costumes:
![MMPR-Green.jpg]()
As their superpowered versions, they can summon giant robots to kick even more ass
![MMPR_Dragonzord.jpg]()
The series has a lot of things going for it that put it above some of the more standard kids action fare, including some kick ass music:
Pretty fun fight coreography:
And some cool bits with linking up the various teams and seasons that give fun continuity nods and also lead to even bigger explosions than normal:
This series is pretty near and dear to me and is totally rad and still ongoing. Right now we have Super Megaforce ongoing which is a crazy awesome place for longtime fans of the series and newcomers:
![1396060767690.jpg]()
It features a team lead by the spirit Gosei, a protector chosen by Zordon, the originator of some of the early power rangers teams. He gives the rangers the ability to use previous powers of other teams, which leads to a bunch of cool costumes and fights, and is going to culminate in a bunch of fun guest stars this season, including Jason David Frank as Tommy Oliver, the original Green Ranger tutoring the current ranger team:
![jdfgreenrangersmike.jpg]()
AND, we have a new film reboot from lionsgate coming soon from Thor writers Zack Stentz and Ashley Miller.
http://insidemovies.ew.com/2014/08/13/mighty-morphin-power-rangers-reboot-to-go-go-in-2016/?cnn=yes
So yeah, I've been sneaking this into the Superheroes thread for a while, but with the 20th season underway and a new film coming I figured I'd give a thread a shot
Talk about your favorite seasons, teams, the current show, film speculation, or ask me ridiculously obscure power rangers questions and I will nerd out for you

[Fitness and Weight Management]: It's a lifestyle
Hey! Are you happy with your body? Probably not, thanks to popular culture's messaging and stereotypes! But wait! There are things you can do to change your body, both in the short and long term, and that could make you happier and potentially contribute to your longevity and good health. Let's talk about them!
Maybe you run? Would you like to? Let's talk about it!
Maybe you strength train? There's a whole other thread for that, but you can talk about it here if you like!
Maybe you do some other kind of exercise like yoga or skipping or jai alai? We can talk about those!
And maybe you think exercise is for the birds and just want to work on eating right? We can talk about that too!
Everyone should have the body that they want and we should help each other achieve our goals!
Thread Disclaimer: Nobody here is a doctor and if you have health concerns, you should go see one. We also may have different opinions about what "in-shape" is and what the ideal body type is and that's ok.

This Thread Will Go Down in [History]
It has recently come to my attention that I don't have a place to post all the weird history things that I accumulate during my average day. I know we got some big history nerds hanging around here (looking at you @Solar and @Lost Salient) and I am always trying to learn new things, which is a lot harder than it sounds.
So yeah, let's talk about old dead people.
I'll start us off, with The Glory of Rome
That video provides a pretty good breakdown, at least of the theory, of the makeup of the Roman army in the late republic and early empire periods.
Once you were in that army (as a legionary, let's say) you would be expected to serve for 16-25 years (the exact required timing depends on the year - Augustus formalized it to 16 years, but that got continually pushed out as time went on). After that time was up, you were expected to serve in an additional capacity as well, as a member of the vexillum veteranorum for another 4 years. And of course, if there was a war going on, you might not want to count on getting out in time.
And while I'm at it, here's another thing about ancient Rome (I really love Rome, okay). The city this time, rather than the empire. This video is one of my favorite things - it's a computer simulation of, essentially, what the city of Rome might have actually looked like in 320 AD.

THE KINGS' GAME

ALSO KNOWN AS: BOARD GOLF

Chess is a two-player strategy board game played on a chessboard, a checkered gameboard with 64 squares arranged in an 8×8 grid. The game is played by millions of people worldwide.
Each player begins with 16 pieces: one king, one queen, two rooks, two knights, two bishops, and eight pawns. Each of the six piece types moves differently, with the most powerful being the queen and the least powerful the pawn. The objective is to checkmate the opponent's king by placing it under an inescapable threat of capture. To this end, a player's pieces are used to attack and capture the opponent's pieces, while supporting each other. In addition to checkmate, the game can be won by voluntary resignation of the opponent, which typically occurs when too much material is lost or checkmate appears inevitable. There are also several ways a game can end in a draw.
Chess is believed to have originated in India sometime before the 7th century. The game was derived from the Indian game Chaturanga, which is also the likely ancestor of the Eastern strategy games xiangqi, janggi, and shogi. (A minority view holds that chess originated in China.) The pieces assumed their current powers in Spain in the late 15th century; the rules were standardized in the 19th century.
Since the second half of the 20th century, computers have been programmed to play chess with increasing success, to the point where the strongest personal computers play at a higher level than the best human players. Since the 1990s, computer analysis has contributed significantly to chess theory, particularly in the endgame. The IBM computer Deep Blue was the first machine to overcome a reigning World Chess Champion in a match when it defeated Garry Kasparov in 1997. The rise of strong computer programs (called "engines") runnable on hand-held devices has led to increasing concerns about cheating during tournaments.

For those just getting into the show, get ready for some grad-a, weaponized sadness.
With that in mind, lets maybe keep the big heavy/twisty stuff from this current season under spoilers, but the last three seasons are open for all.
Besides that the only thing I can really think to say is... Suck a dick, dumb shits!

SoCal Wildfires
So the wildfire situation here in SoCal is getting pretty out of hand and I know there are a fair number of forumers in the greater SoCal region that it warrants a thread. Dry conditions and strong Santa Ana winds have made the region into a powder keg and it's going off. All fires are largely moving west-southwest with the strong prevailing winds. Areas affected by the fires are also seeing gusts between 40-60mph, exacerbating the issue. These conditions are predicted to last through Thursday at least.
Currently there are three notable wildfires burning in Los Angeles and Ventura counties. The most severe is the Thomas Fire burning in Ventura. It's 45k acres in size and growing with no containment, has burned 150+ structures, and has made it to downtown Ventura. Ventura is currently under a state of emergency. More than 7000 homes are under mandatory evacuation orders and more could quickly be added. Santa Paula and Ojai are also under threat from this fire.
The next most serious fire is the Creek Fire burning near Sylmar and Lake View Terrace on the north end of the San Fernando valley. It has burned 4000 acres so far and is at 0% containment. 2500+ homes have been evacuated and the 210 Freeway in the area is closed in both directions. An unconfirmed number of structures have been burned.
The third fire sprung up just hours ago in Santa Clarita. The Rye Fire is up to 500+ acres with no containment. It has prompted the closure of Interstate 5 in both directions around Newhall Ranch Road/Six Flags Magic Mountain. Evacuations have been issued (exact number of homes affected unknown right now) and power outages are affecting the area. The 911 system in the area is also experiencing issues due to the volume of calls about the outage.
If you're near any of these fires please stay alert and listen to local news and emergency outlets for information on possible evacuations or other dangers.
I'm down in LA but the horizon to the north is clearly shrouded in smoke.

Here's what I'd like to avoid: Any kind of stupid "oh that sucks". If you don't like it, that's cool. You don't gotta tell me.
Instead, why don't you say: "That's cool, this is what I enjoy."
That way we can get around all the bullshit and just enjoy music. We could also talk about music. Like, something interesting you heard on the radio (since this is where Pop Music comes from). Or maybe a band did something cool (this happens occasionally). Or maybe you went and saw a rad show (I do this sometimes).
If you want to come in here and bag on someone, or a band, or a style of music... You can do that, but please don't. It just makes you a goose and a mean goose is scary as fuck. Ever seen one of those fuckers? All honkin' and waving their wings around for attention. Shit be scary.
Anyway, music.
What are you listening to?
Oh, I'm also not sure on having a thread with just a ton of embedded YouTube links, so if someone has some good guidelines, um... Post them. Otherwise, I'm sayin' like... 1 per post? Just, like, pick a song you really like and represents something, and link that. Don't link every song from the album you just bought. Let's be reasonable adults on the internet.

I don't know why my other thread about this isn't working but my love of this movie conquers all. Blade Runner is an awesome ass movie. I bought the blu ray box set today and the Final Cut looks so good. It is so pretty doggs. The acting is so choice.
