Sorry I distracted the Love thread!

I will flesh this out (haha maybe this is the love thread) later tonight, but I didn't want to be responsible for too much sidetracking.

Are you interested in cool architecture? Historic or modern? Both?

Konbanwa!

Have you ever found yourself wondering, "What if The Real World had conversations about feelings instead of fistfights?"

Wait, no, come back!

So, Terrace House is a Japanese reality show, available on Netflix. Three men and three women live in a house, pursuing their dreams (and romance). This is a show that is patient, and gentle, and deeply rewarding, and nice. When is the last time you watched a show that was just nice? Everybody genuinely wants the best for everyone else, and people are kind to one another, and goddammit the world is a mess and a nice television show is a fuckin' panacea right about now.

The action is commented upon at regular intervals by a panel of hosts, who are frequently insightful and regularly hilarious. They riff on the stories and characters, dish on their favorite 'ships, and pitch their own bizarro theories on secret pasts and hidden plots - it's like getting a big gang of your funny friends together to watch a reality show, but it's built into the show itself. It's incredibly well done, and adds a whole lot to the enterprise.

If you further want to be sold on the show, Griffin and Rachel McElroy have an episode of their podcast, Rose Buddies, where they gush about the show's myriad charms.

Now onto our (initial) cast!

profile5.jpg
Mizuki Shida

Out of all these nice guys and gals, she's the nicest. She has every single person's back, even when she probably shouldn't, and is supportive and cool and the best. Mizuki 4 lyfe.

profile4.jpg
Minori Nakada

Aspiring model, terminally awkward, nice nice gal.

profile3.jpg
Tatsuya Uchihara

Hair stylist, and a tough nut to crack. Initially seems like a bit of a jerk, but the secret is, he is staggeringly self-conscious and inexperienced. Deep down, he's a nice nice boy. I have never been so torn between wishing well of someone and wanting to throttle them for their self-sabotage. Watching this dude is like watching a horror movie, sometimes. "Don't go in there! Don't do that! Oh my god, what are you doing?"

profile2.jpg
Yuuki Adachi

Occasionally overbearing about the realism of folks' dreams, which is weird because he's a professional tap dancer in the year of our lord 2016. But he's still a nice nice boy and I wish he'd catch a friggin' break.

profile6.jpg
Yuuriko Hayata

She's fine, I guess? Kinda oblivious, and a bit of a dork, but harmless enough.

profile1.jpg
Makoto Hasegawa

This dude's a chump of the lowest order. He sucks on wheels.

Let's talk Terrace House! The cast ends up being kind of fluid, so make sure you use some spoilers to tag what part of the show you're on - it's 46 episodes long, so there's a lot of room for shit to go down, and a lot of the fun in the show is seeing how the dynamic in the house shifts and evolves.

Terrace House! It's very good!

What's Tokusatsu?
Wikipedia wrote:
Tokusatsu (特撮) is a Japanese term that applies to any live-action film or television drama that features considerable use of special effects (tokusatsu literally translates as "special filming" in Japanese).

Tokusatsu entertainment often deals with science fiction, fantasy or horror, but movies and television shows in other genres can sometimes count as tokusatsu as well. The most popular types of tokusatsu include kaiju monster movies like the Godzilla and Gamera film series; superhero TV serials such as the Kamen Rider and Metal Hero series; and mecha dramas like Giant Robo. Some tokusatsu television programs combine several of these subgenres, for example the Ultraman and Super Sentai series. Tokusatsu is one of the most popular forms of Japanese entertainment, but most tokusatsu movies and television programs are not widely known outside Asia.

nthQcnS.jpg

So this is tokuastsu.

Dv5ub.jpg

And this is tokuastsu.

jlITJAU.jpg

Even this is tokuastsu.

vtMcbXo.jpg

However, this is what most fans know today as tokuastsu or just 'toku' for short; Kamen Rider, Super Sentai and Metal Heroes.

gPKVI.jpg

Kamen Rider started out first in 1971 and the group of shows lasting from that time till 1989 (the heroes from then referred to as the Showa Riders) mostly involved regular guys getting turned into cyborgs due to evil COBRA-esque organizations hellbent on taking over the world. Only the Riders with their super-charged motorcycles could stop them and the various monsters of the week from getting their way. In 2000, Kamen Rider began anew. Unlike the Showa Riders, these 'Heisei Riders' had pretty much no connection to each other and only met in non-canon material. They still kept the trait however of their powers (non-cybernetic this time) having connections to the very evil they were trying to face. This lasted until about 2009 in which the movies of the series Kamen Rider Decade began to connect both eras together canonically and the following shows afterwards (dubbed by some as the 'neo-Heisei' era) can be said to share the same universe, something promoted by the Movie Wars crossover films.

JFbt3xo.png

The current series at the moment is Kamen Rider Ghost. The titular Kamen Rider this time around is Takeru Tenkuji, a young man whose father was a famous ghost hunter who was killed mysteriously ten years back. On the same day that people in the same district of his family's temple are attacked by unseen assailants, Takeru receives a mysterious object sent to him by his father prior to his death, an eye-shaped item called an Eyecon.

MKs82SM.jpg

As it turns out, the attacks are connected to the Eyecon, caused by ghost-like creatures called the Ganma who were sent to find it and take out anyone in the way. The Ganma can only be seen if someone has an Eyecon, so Takeru leads the Ganma away from his friends at the temple, determined to fight them off.

tZJWgve.jpg

And promptly gets killed.

NnIi9hB.jpg

Of course this would be a pretty short series if things ended there. Takeru thus meets a mysterious man in a space beyond the mortal coil who grants him the ability to become a spiritual Kamen Rider once Takeru shows he has a knack to connect with the Eyecons. This power gives Takeru a second chance at life, one he can use to not only fight off the Ganma but also find Eyecons holding the spiritual essence of great historical figures. Not only will using them grant Takeru new abilities, but fifteen of them gathered together can grant him the power to have anything he wants.

hm1y3gN.jpg

Which is good since Takeru's second life is on a time limit. If he can't find fifteen great Eyecons in 99 days to wish himself back to proper life, he'll die permanently. And with the Ganma looking for them as well for unknown but probably dire reasons, Ghost has his work cut out for him.

CHg4g.jpg

The other major half of modern toku is Super Sentai, AKA the shows Power Rangers gets most of their fighting footage from. Starting in 1975 with Himitsu Sentai Goranger, the various shows within the franchise have grown to offer a more teamwork-based counterpart to the loner Kamen Rider with teams of three to five (with an extra teammate or two joining in later during the series) fighting in helmets and spandex against monsters sent from various evil powers seeking to conquer or destroy the planet, often having to fight the monsters twice as after it's initial defeat, it grows so the group can permanently defeat it with a giant mecha.

y4UR6jU.jpg

The current group in play at the moment is Shuriken Sentai Ninninger. The series follows a team made up of the grandchildren of Yoshitaka Igasaki AKA the Last Ninja. Decades ago, Yoshi fought off and sealed away Sengoku warlord-turned-demon Gengetsu Kibaoni when he and his demonic forces tried to prematurely return to conquer Japan. However, not all of Kibaoni's Youkai army was locked away with him. A remaining vassal, Kyuemon, steals the tool needed from the Igasaki household to free the army. Now Yoshi's grandchildren must put their lives on hold in order to strengthen their ninja skills and battle the Kibaoni Army Corps as the Shuriken Sentai who don't fight from the shadows, resealing Kibaoni himself before he grows too powerful.

eILyBk0.jpg

And if that's not enough reason to give the series a try, be aware that their Sixth Ranger is a Japanese man from America who transforms with a hamburger rather then a sword since his sword already doubles as his guitar. Oh, and his Zord rides around on a bison-themed ATV.

pVl8Qhw.jpg

If you remember VR Troopers or Big Bad Beetleborgs, then you've seen footage from the Metal Heroes franchise, the shows within tending to involve humans or aliens using metal armor to fight villains. While not as big as either Kamen Rider or Super Sentai, it's been making a comeback recently in the last few years based around the first Metal Heroes, the Space Sheriffs. The first, Space Sheriff Gavan, returned for a teamup with the Super Sentai group Gokaiger and then later in his own movie where he passed on the title to a younger heir. Now a pair of movies will be made to install new faces in the other two Space Sheriffs' boots, Sharivan and Shaider.

Is there any toku I may have missed? Feel free to talk about it here alongside what I've already mentioned as well as any American counterparts they have.

Do you ever find yourself down in the dumps about modern life? Everything is just so stressful and busy all the time, you never get a chance to relax and appreciate the great outdoors. Well you're in luck, your grandfather just died. No wait, come back! He went peacefully (I think), and he left you the deed to his farm. That's right, you're movin' to Pelican Town in Stardew Valley!

Main_Logo.png

What's there to do in Stardew Valley? Well, there's farming. Grow all kinds of crops across the four seasons. Cultivate (see what I did there) relationships with the various townspeople, and even bone some of them, regardless of gender! There's a guy that looks like Fabio, that's kind of funny, although most of the guys in the game look like total goobers.

There's also a very, very, very deep mine that seems to have mysterious and spooky monsters lurking within. And you can fish!

Unfortunately there's some conflict in good ol' Pelican Town. The once-rad community center has fallen into disrepair and the basically Wal-Mart Crossed With Coca Cola company Joja Corporation is trying to move in on their turf. Will you work with the weird little forest spirits to restore the community center or be a tool of THE MAN and join Joja Corp? It's up to you! But seriously, don't join Joja Corp.

Look, basically it's Harvest Moon But Not. It's real good, and surprisingly addicting.

Anyway, it's a real fun game and a lot of people here are into it. I'll add more to this post when I've got a bit more time.

So I am on a grand months-long sojourn across the entire continental United States (mostly the west coast because the family is there) and I've been enjoying the many and sundry wonders of this great nation

But also I've been bored stiff driving across interstates and wondering why anyone would ever go to New Mexico for any reason. Also I got food poisoning in a Waffle House in Texas when there was three inches of snow on the ground. It's been a weird couple of months!

Still, it's been a real fun experience, for the most part. There's something about the simple goals of a road trip, the clarity of purpose and (beyond holiday and family obligations) the freedom to go wherever you please that makes it different from flying somewhere and renting a car, y'know?

So in light of the scope of this journey I am on (and since Christmas is over now) I thought I'd make a thread where we could talk about traveling and vacations and stuff

Where have you been, SE++, and where do you hope to go?

...and also can you Seattle people tell me where to go because I don't know shit about anything around here. I guess the space needle is cool?? And there's casinos I guess???

Welcome to the new Doctor Who thread! A vast improvement over the feckless charm of the old one, don't you agree?

colin-baker-sixth-6th-tardis-umbrella.jpg

Doctor Who is the longest running science fiction show of all time, and celebrated its 50th anniversary in November of last year. I will leave the explanation of the show's premise to the superior hive mind known as Wikipedia:
Wikipedia wrote:
The programme depicts the adventures of a Time Lord—a time travelling, humanoid alien known as the Doctor. He explores the universe in his 'TARDIS', a sentient time-travelling space ship. Its exterior appears as a blue British police box, a common sight in Britain in 1963, when the series first aired. Along with a succession of companions, the Doctor faces a variety of foes while working to save civilisations, help ordinary people, and right wrongs.

We covered a lot of ground in the last thread: The return of nine missing episodes, Matt Smith's departure, the 50th Anniversary, the casting of Peter Capaldi and the entirety of season 8 culminating in - alright I'll spoiler it but you really should have caught up by now, shame on you -
The surprise return of The Master as a woman, a.k.a. The Mistress or Missy, played by Michelle Gomez.

So what does the future hold for Doctor Who fans?

- While Season 9 may be a long way off, Doctor Who isn't quite finished for the year just yet. There will be a Christmas Special this, well Christmas, starring Nick Frost as "Santa" and also something that looks like a sort of gummier version of the Xenomorph from Alien.

image

- Rumours persist about Jenna Coleman's (who plays the Doctor's current companion Clara) possible departure from the show at the end of this year, but when questioned Jenna has consistently played coy, something she could almost have been genetically engineered for.

- In missing episode news, a Bleeding Cool source has painted a very grim picture of snowballing lies and broken promises behind the scenes of Phil Morris' negotiations with the Beeb. Still, if this is true then we will at least get Marco Polo back at some point.

- Lastly, the BBC has tweeted that we'll get a sneak peek at a clip from the Christmas Special for this year's Children In Need appeal. It will broadcast tomorrow night, London time, and should be up on YouTube pretty soon after.

The Revenge of Interesting Facts: Spend Your Lunch Break on Wikipedia

$

Last February, in The Year of Our Lady 2015, The Thread About Interesting Facts For Interested Individuals lasted for nigh unto one calendar year minus a few days. I learned a lot of things from that thread:

- Shirkes, a.k.a. Butcherbirds are metal as hell and impale their prey on thorns to slowly age like fine wine
- Blue jays go catatonic when you roll them on their backs
- Crows can use tools and problem solving skills
- Seagulls live a really long time
- 50 Canadian geese can produce three and a half tons of demon-shit in a year

That's only bird facts and only from the first five pages. (Seriously, that is a lot of goose shit.)So, I went to Wikipedia and two cups of tea later, I have discovered these things:

*Today (May 10th) is the 75th anniversary of the decision of Nazi leader Rudolf Hess to parachute "into Scotland in an attempt to negotiate peace with the United Kingdom." Hess' plane actually ran out of fuel, that's why he had to parachute. He was promptly identified, debriefed and then shipped the fuck out proving that no one in Glasgow wanted to deal with his bullshit, presumably because he exhibited signs of "hypochondria" and "paranoia." Either that or someone was actually trying to kill him. I mean, who wouldn't, really? Seriously, the guy was an asshole.

*Following the link for exhumation within the previous article, I proceeded to Ancient Egyptian funerary practices. The earliest graves found are from pre-history ... which means they had no writing, not like ... dinosaurs and shit. The oldest graves discovered only contain a single pot.
Without any written evidence, there is little to provide information about contemporary beliefs concerning the afterlife except for the regular inclusion of a single pot in the grave. In view of later customs, the pot was probably intended to hold food for the deceased.

Considering the early stage of agriculture, it seems fairly reasonable to guess that those early funerals didn't have a lot of food to spare for someone rotting in the ground. By the end of the Pre-Dynastyic period, the dead got more pots, more food, some odds and ends thrown in with them and eventually,
Gender differences in burial emerged with the inclusion of weapons in men's graves and cosmetics palettes in women's graves.

Because what is any lesson in history without yet another glaring example of patriarchy.

*From there I went to burial goods then to grave robbery and right on into The Black Market. There's a lot of obvious examples of current black market goods like arms, drugs, human organs, animals, animal products, counterfeit money, counterfeit processed goods, copyrighted entertainment (apparently mix-tapes are illegal) ... the list goes on and on. The big one here in the US was Prohibition which lasted from 1920 to 1933. A good deal of information is present within the article, I highly recommend reading it if you would like further proof that Americans are weirdly Puritanical in public but godless heathens in private. Oddly enough, Winston Churchill believed that Prohibition was "an affront to the whole history of mankind." After the ratification of the 21st Amendment, Prohibition had ended but many speakeasies had already accepted a mixed clientele of ladies and dudes for the intervening years. Public drinking for women was no longer the purview of an immoral feminine character because women had shitty jobs too, motherfucker, it's The Depression, deal with it.

Take that, patriarchy. @Usagi SMASH. Probably her grandmother, though unless Jess is actually a time-traveler. NANA SMASH.

*Industrialization was kind of a short article, but it led me to manufacturing which led me to 3D Printing ....

....

....

Seriously, this shit is so cool. Why are we not 3D printing everything?
As of 2012, 3D bio-printing technology has been studied by biotechnology firms and academia for possible use in tissue engineering applications in which organs and body parts are built using inkjet techniques. In this process, layers of living cells are deposited onto a gel medium or sugar matrix and slowly built up to form three-dimensional structures including vascular systems.[158] The first production system for 3D tissue printing was delivered in 2009, based on NovoGen bioprinting technology.[159] Several terms have been used to refer to this field of research: organ printing, bio-printing, body part printing,[160] and computer-aided tissue engineering, among others.[161] The possibility of using 3D tissue printing to create soft tissue architectures for reconstructive surgery is also being explored.[162]

In 2013, Chinese scientists began printing ears, livers and kidneys, with living tissue. Researchers in China have been able to successfully print human organs using specialized 3D bio printers that use living cells instead of plastic[citation needed]. Researchers at Hangzhou Dianzi University designed the "3D bio printer" dubbed the "Regenovo". Xu Mingen, Regenovo's developer, said that it takes the printer under an hour to produce either a mini liver sample or a four to five inch ear cartilage sample. Xu also predicted that fully functional printed organs may be possible within the next ten to twenty years.[163][164] In the same year, researchers at the University of Hasselt, in Belgium had successfully printed a new jawbone for an 83-year-old Belgian woman.[165]

Oh.

We are.

There's so much interesting stuff in the world we live in, so many things we've created, so many habits and routines we perform, so many of our mistakes that turn out to have surprising positive effects that I can't imagine ever possibly learning all about it, even though I want to. I rely upon all of you to pick up the mantle (as I lay down for the evening) and delve into Interesting Things so that you may spread the knowledge far and wide.

It all started with this guy coming back from an island after five years having to survive mercenaries, terrorists, magic & probably more before becoming The Green Arrow!

This show goes from good to great to terrible back to good and with how the end of this season is looking maybe end at great?

Either way if you love DRAMA!, gritty story-lines with tough moral choices and the prettiest people on TV you'll like it.

This was the first spin-off from Arrow and it the most comic-booky show to ever be on television. It's great, it's just fucking great. You want super-powers and giant telepathic gorillas and alternate universes? This show is throwing it all against the wall and its all sticking. It also has the best actor in the Arrowverse, which doesn't hurt it.

NEcTXWAsyisogg_1_b.jpg

This is the second spin-off from Arrow and as much as I have been told it is kind of meh... It has three terrific characters, a horrid villain with an accent that JUST DOESN'T WORK, and some girl that used to be a barista. Maybe check it out once it hits Netflix next fall?

The many divine skills of Kim Jong Un

Okay, hopefully this is okay to post here.

With the revelation of our supreme leader's divine weather control powers, I thought that we who possess special inside information on Kim Jong Un's many talents should finally reveal them to the world! Through my special contacts in North Korea, I have discovered several things.
1. Not only is Kim Jong Un, the best rock singer, pop singer, country singer, polka performer, square dance caller, techno musician, guitarist, pianist, drummer, bassist, flutist, sax player, and (it goes without saying) rapper in North Korea (if not all Asia), he is also the creator and only performer of a whole new type of genre.
2. This genre us called Unix to those who know of its existence, named for its creator, but it's true name is unpronounceable to those who are not Kim Jong Un, as it is written and performed in his own, self-created private language. Those who have heard this language call it "too complex, efficient and beautiful for mere mortal tongues."
3. The music in question has only been played for close party officials, but one of them, speaking under a vow of secrecy, claimed it was so beautiful, that God himself came down, to ask the Supreme Leader if he could use it to liven up his own place. Kim Jong Un refused, and God left, admitting he was right.

This is only what I know, surely you guys have heard more?
