I has never struck me before that my brother could be one. I always felt that he was a pretty odd guy, with clothing and habits that simply didn't really fit in with the rest of society, an eccentric.
That is until Yesterday.
Yesterday we were going to see The Hobbit: Smaugs desolation. Yesterday I met his friends, they're all clones.
I knew they had similar jobs (computer science related).
I knew that they share some hobbies. They're all the type of people that visit places like Nepal when they have a spring/autumn vacation (hiking in the himalayas) and when they go skiing they use telemark gear and travel with organisations like UCPA (Union des Centres Sportifs de Plein Air).
I did not know how much else they shared.
For the first visual impression there was a common denominator, a massive "H". "H" as in "Haglöfs" that is, a swedish clothing company that specializes in high-quality sport/outdoor gear. Haglöfs jackets, Haglöfs pants, Haglöfs boots, haglöfs caps, haglöfs sweaters. For all I know they were probably wearing Haglöfs underwear as well (I have no idea if Haglöfs makes underwear).
Then we visited a greek restaurant to grab something to eat before the movie started. There are a lot of delicious types of food that you can find in a Greek restaurant. Bifteki, Kleftiko, Kefte, Gyros, Souvlaki, Dolmades and more. Did they pick any of that? Nope. They picked burgers with fries and tsatziki with either a mineral water or a coca cola. All of them. Every single one of them.
I tried some soft interrogation during the dinner and while it's not polite to dig too deeply I discovered that they're all in their 30s, they're all single, they all spent christmas at their uncles place (in groups of approximately 10 people and between 2 and 4 younger children belonging either to said uncles or their cousins).
At that point we left for the cinema, and spent the next 3 hours watching Smaugs desolation.
Leaving the cinema we started talking about our impressions of the movie. Their impressions were all the same.
This was good, that was bad, that could have been done better. All identical.
I thought my brother was always the odd man out, the eccentric.
