An unknown attacker has stolen an estimated 40 million credit cards from Target stores during the Black Friday shopping period, extending all the way to December 15th.

Apparently anyone who used a credit card at a physical Target location in the US during that three week period has been victimized. Online and international shoppers were safe.

The attack was apparently carried against the physical point of sale systems, and perhaps the card readers themselves.

The hackers have stolen most of the information about the card, including the number, expiration date, and other information used in Point of Sale operations, and the cards have already appeared on identity thief markets for sale by the millions.

Including my card. If you shop at Target, check your bank statements. There have been anecdotes that these cards are already being used by identity thieves.

Target claims that the "three digit code" that enables a lot of online shopping was NOT stolen, but at this point... I am not quite ready to believe what they have to say on the matter.

Merry Christmas! We live only at the whim of a shadowy cabal of crypto-hackers!
